Positioning on Side
Position the resident on their side, supported by pillows, with bony prominences off the mattress. Use a turning sheet. The bed should be at waist height for the CNA. Bed rails: only if the care plan says so.
5 minutes•12 steps•5 critical

Why this matters
30° lateral, pillows supporting, pressure points off — that's the pass.
Quick tips
- 30° lateral tilt is the pressure-injury-prevention sweet spot
- Pillow between the knees prevents the top leg from rolling forward
- Lower the bed before moving the patient — protect your back
Common mistakes
- Putting the patient at 90° instead of 30° (over-rotates, creates pressure)
- Forgetting the pillow between the knees
- Raising the bed rails without checking the care plan
- Moving the patient with the bed at waist height (work too high)
